The History of Chito Ryu

Chito Ryu Karate begins (& ends) with
courtesy & respect for self & others,
focusing on good manners & self-discipline,
building self-confidence & physical fitness.

Chito Ryu (pronounced "chee toe roo") is one of the oldest styles of karate in Canada and offers participants excellent physical conditioning, strong mental discipline, and a proven method of self-defense.  Instruction is given by experienced Black Belt instructors, registered with the Japan Karatedo Chito-Kai and with the National Karate Association in Canada.
Karate, which translates as empty hand, is a devastating form of unarmed combat.  Chito Ryu karate is a traditional Okinawan karate style and is characterized by blocks, punches, kicks, & strikes.  Chito Ryu karate is an ergonomically correct form of karate, designed to instill confidence & self-discipline while preparing the mind & body to defend against aggressive behaviour.
Chito Ryu karate is taught in over 80 clubs across North America & Europe, including the four schools on Prince Edward Island who are all members of the International Chito Ryu Karate Federation, the Canadian Chito Ryu Karate Association, the PEI Chito Ryu Karate Association, and the National Karate Association of Canada.  The PEI Chito Ryu Karate Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of the Chito Ryu style of Karate.  The founding club was established in 1970 and has been holding classes at St. Jean Elementary School (in Charlottetown) since its inception with a current, active enrollment of over 80 students!
The Charlottetown Chito Ryu Karate Club has enjoyed a 35-year history of classes at St. Jean’s Elementary School - the gymnasium & its hardwood floor have served well over that time.  The Charlottetown Club now has an opportunity to move to another location as the sole tenant in a dedicated, full-time facility at the Holland College West Royalty & Sport PEI building.  This pending move marks a new chapter in the history of Chito Ryu in Charlottetown.
The Appeal of Chito Ryu

The Chito Ryu style of karate is practiced by all ages as no special athletic abilities or flexibility are required.

Chito Ryu karate, as a martial art, is designed for people of both sexes and of all walks of life.

With well-designed calisthenics to protect the body from injury, and painstaking attention given to the mastery of technique, Chito Ryu karate develops healthy bodies and sharply focused minds

These qualities are important at all stages of life.

Children enjoy karate's brisk physical activity, and parents appreciate the discipline it instills in them!
